Your Newborn’s Hospital Bag: What to Pack and How to Stay Organised

Preparing for your baby’s arrival is exciting and a little overwhelming. I still remember the planning and organising that went into packing my first-born's hospital bag (there's a lot to remember). I hope we can help.

Alongside your own essentials, packing a well-thought-out hospital bag for your newborn will help you feel calm and ready for those first special hours and days together.

Baby Essentials Checklist

Clothing

  • 6-8 baby vests & 6-8 baby grows: Newborns go through lots of outfit changes, so pack plenty — it’s better to have extras than to run out. Any leftovers will be perfect for when you arrive home.

    • Going home outfit: Choose something adorable and weather-appropriate to keep your baby cozy on the journey and keep matching accessories together so that you are not rummaging and stressing before leaving the hospital.

Nappies and Accessories

  • Plenty of nappies, wipes and nappy bags for those first days

  • Two soft blankets

  • Scratch mitts, socks, bibs and newborn hats to keep tiny hands and feet warm

  • Muslin cloths for all the vomit (I'm not going to lie theres a lot of vomit)

Optional:

  • Dummy/doddie
  • Formula and bottles
  • Vasoline (for sticky, newborn first poo's)
  • White noise/relaxing music downloaded on Shopify (may be useful during labour and delivery also)

Keep It Simple: Organise Smartly

When every second counts, digging through bags is the last thing you want to do. The Packable Pouch was created to make the packing and unpacking process as calm as possible for new moms and dads so that you can enjoy your newborn without pain, stress and discomfort. The Packable Pouch is a foldable clothing organiser that keeps your baby’s clothes and accessories neatly sorted and easy to find for you, your partner, or the nursing team. A pouch for every outfit and accessory.

Don’t Forget: Car Seat Safety

If you’re taking your baby home by car, a rear-facing car seat designed for newborns is a must. Make sure it fits your vehicle and practise installing it ahead of time — so you feel confident and ready when the day comes.

Final Thoughts

Packing for your newborn’s hospital stay is about being as prepared as possible, but more than that, it’s about giving yourself space to breathe and focus on what really matters: those first unforgettable moments with your baby. Don't stress the small stuff, enjoy the big moments.
